No Magic Pill

I used to believe there was a moment coming.

A moment where it would all click. Where the work would slow down. Where the anxiety would disappear. Where I’d finally feel… peace.

I thought success would be that moment. I thought impact with TOMs shoes would provide that moment. I thought if I just kept going, kept building, kept achieving— I’d arrive.

But here’s what I’ve learned the hard way:

There is no magic pill.

Not for your mental health. Not for your purpose. Not for your relationships. Not for your sense of self.

No single breakthrough. No perfect routine. No product, practice, or podcast episode that suddenly fixes everything. When I’m honest, that realization frustrates me. Because I’ve spent a lot of my life chasing solutions.

Build a company.
Sell a company.
Start another one.
Give more away.
Do more good.
Go surfing.
Get barrelled.
Meditate.
Concentrate.
Run faster.
Run slower.

And I tried a lot of other things too. Therapy, breathwork, cold plunges, plant medicine, supplements, silent retreats, more therapy, different therapy, fasting, journaling, sun salutations, hypnosis, prayer. Some of it helped a lot. Some of it helped a little. None of it was the answer. Because there isn’t one.

That’s where the idea for a podcast was born. I wanted a podcast that would help me explore this path. And as they say, it’s always best to write the book you want to read, make the film you want to see and in this case, create the podcast you need to hear. My hope is that you can relate and that this podcast will provide comfort, value and maybe even healing.

A few years ago my own mental health was a disaster. I was depressed, hopeless and suicidal. Since then I have been on a healing path and what I’ve come to believe, slowly and with a lot of doubt along the way, that mental health is not a problem you solve. It’s a relationship you tend.

Everything matters. Sleep matters. Friendship matters. What you eat matters. What you watch matters. Whether you’ve forgiven your father matters. Whether you’ve forgiven yourself matters more. The morning matters. The evening matters. The five minutes you spend on your phone before bed matter in ways we’re only starting to understand.

That’s a lot to hold. It’s also, I think, the truth.

The No Magic Pill Podcast is my attempt to sit with that truth in public. To have honest conversations with people who have gone deep into one piece of the puzzle, without pretending their piece is the whole puzzle. Researchers, healers, athletes, monks, doctors, parents, recovering addicts, teenagers. People who have something real to say and the humility to say it without selling.

And I’m not going to be the host who has it figured out. I am the guy across the table who’s still searching, still asking and still learning. We’re all just figuring it out and it’s always better to do this kind of work in a community, rather than isolated and alone.
