Green Lights Aren’t Luck

The first guest on the podcast is Matthew McConaughey. Before this podcast conversation I used to think that greenlights were a mixture of magic and luck.

Right place. Right time. The right person saying yes.

But listening to Matthew and sitting with his story… I see it differently now.

He puts it simply:

“Green lights mean go. Red lights mean stop. Yellow lights mean slow down. But eventually, they all turn green.”

Green lights aren’t given.
They’re built.

Not through grinding harder.
Through showing up longer.

Before anything worked, I was already in motion.
Traveling. Listening. Saying yes to things that didn’t make sense yet.

Most of it went nowhere.

A few things changed everything.

That’s the part we don’t talk about.

We want clarity before we commit.
We want guarantees before we begin.

But life doesn’t work like that.

The green lights in my life didn’t come because I waited.
They came because I kept moving… even when it was messy, unclear, and honestly uncomfortable.

And when the light finally turned, I was already there.

Already in position.
Already in the work.
Already becoming the person who could walk through it.

That’s not luck.

That’s the math of showing up.

On the podcast, Matthew talks about writing letters to himself. Taking solo walkabouts. Facing the parts of his story he wanted to avoid.

That’s how he built his green lights.

Not by waiting.
By doing the inner work most of us try to skip.

Because here’s the truth:

The outer opportunities show up when the inner work is done.

So if you’re staring at a red light right now, waiting for a sign…

Don’t wait.

Move.

Make the call.
Take the trip.
Write the thing.

Most of it won’t matter.

Some of it will change your life.

And you won’t know which is which until later.
